Lids 4 Kids

In the of winter 2016, I had the good fortune to meet some amazing young people. While they would enjoy a meal together and time with their friends, they were encouraged to self-express through art and music. I am not much of an artist but I love knitting so while we chatted and hung out, I would knit. I soon set myself a goal and then realized I had set a goal I could simply not achieve on my own – to knit 100 hats by October 1st, 2016 to donate to the homeless youth in our community.

In July 2016 I launched a Facebook page which I called “Lids 4 Kids” to solicit crafting help with my crazy goal. The response was heart-warming. Wonderful women, some of whom, I had never met came forward to offer to help me with my goal.

87 hats, 13 scarves & 6 headbands created by over a dozen generous women were donated to the youth at Ottawa Innercity Ministries. Another dozen hats were donated to the Ottawa Mission for their pre-Christmas drive.

“Lids 4 Kids” 2016 was an overwhelming success because of the generosity of the people that contributed their own time and supplies to provide some love and attention without judgment.

I am still moved beyond words at the generosity of people. And the enthusiasm of supporters grew.

In the fall 2017, 175 hats plus scarves and neck-warmers were donated to the Kanata Food Cupboard Christmas program, the Ottawa Inner city Ministries, Chaffey’s Locks Christmas for Kids and the Kingston Shoebox Project.

I am very proud of the work we have accomplished to support vulnerable populations in our area.

What’s the plan for 2018? More of the same of course!
